What Does an Alternator Do?

The battery provides the initial jump that gets your car running when you first turn the ignition. Its power is then transferred to the alternator, which is able to keep everything running through a belt drive attached to the engine. It functions like a generator.

An alternator has a very long and trouble-free life, but it causes a problem when it does finally begin to fail. There are some signs you can be aware of, so you’ll know it’s time for a replacement. One is dimly lit lights. The alternator keeps the battery charged while the car is running, but if it goes, there isn’t enough energy to charge the battery and electrical system, so lights won’t be supported.

When you notice a problem, bring it by our service center at Ed Corley Ford Sales Inc. in Grants and speak with one of our technicians. We don’t want you stranded somewhere.
