It's five o'clock, and you can feel time ticking by slowly. How long will it be until dinner is ready? It's almost like you can't even think straight!
In fact, studies have shown that people are essentially incapable of making rational choices when their blood sugar is low. The types of food you eat can also impact brain function.
This can be a big problem is you are a Detroit Public Schools (DPS) student.
High school students' academic success or failure can set the tone for the rest of their careers, so the ability to pay attention, absorb information, and think critically are essential -- and that means nutrition is essential.
Unfortunately, many Detroit neighborhoods are "food deserts," where there is no access to fresh, wholesome produce at an affordable price. So the school district decided to step in and take action by providing more nutritious lunches, and breakfasts too.
The Detroit School Garden Collaborative grows produce right in the city, sometimes in raised bed gardens at the schools themselves, where students can learn the science behind growing food. The trucks used to help work the farms, and deliver the produce for this program are largely from the automaker founded in the city of Detroit over 100 years ago -- Ford.
